Have you ever dealt with fears, excess weight, complexes, or depression? These problems can be solved with the help of a psychologist, by way of a long and expensive process. But what if you could heal yourself while you slept? Researchers from REMspace published an article last summer on treating phobias within lucid dreams (LD). In this study, 89% of participants experienced fear in LDs, and half reported a decrease in the fear after just one session.
Similar experiments are being conducted all over the world. Scientists from Austria have organized a program to treat post-traumatic stress disorder via LD techniques, among others. Authors from the United States and Lithuania have applied LD techniques to treat clinical depression, while English and Canadian researchers have tackled insomnia, and Romanian doctors have worked with psychotic patients. Researchers from Spain have suggested using LDs to reduce nightmares in cases of narcolepsy, although in this case the practice has been shown to alleviate symptoms rather than treat the condition.
The idea of healing the psyche through lucid dreaming has been presented not only in scientific journals, but also at conferences and in the media. According to surveys, around 40% of lucid dreamers use LD for physical or psychological healing, and even celebrities talk about how they have worked through childhood traumas in their LDs.
Now, all the ways of influencing psychology through lucid dreaming have been collected in one place and published in a new book called REM Psychology. As the authors write, in our dreams we can not only gain strength, but also learn to consciously simulate any events and thus get down to the true root of our psychological problems. In the end, it is an additional tool that we can use to improve the quality of our lives. The book is authored by Michael Raduga, along with a slate of contributors, including experienced lucid dreamers and psychologists.
