Lucid dreaming has been used as a spiritual practice in Tibetan dream yoga, which is thousands of years old. Today, some lucid dreamers perceive the world of lucid dreaming from an esoteric, mystical, or religious perspective. Tadas Stumbrys, a constant researcher of this topic from Lithuania, conducted a survey to examine the potential connection between lucid dreaming practice and spirituality.

The author recruited 471 respondents, 95% of whom had experienced at least one lucid dream and 65% of whom regularly had lucid dreams. Participants filled out several questionnaires, and the frequency of lucid dreams, mystical experiences, and inclination towards spiritual practices were assessed.

The results confirm a connection between lucid dreaming and spirituality. Specifically, experienced lucid dreamers were more likely to be interested in the supernatural, mysticism, esotericism, and religion. As the author explains, lucid dreams are unusual in themselves, so they can easily become a spiritual practice. For this to happen, one needs to actively interact with the dream world, treat it (and the beings in it) as sacred, and cultivate feelings of joy and positivity.

Is the practice of lucid dreaming spiritual for you?

The report was presented in June 2024 at the 41st Annual Conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
