White Lucid Dreaming

Jul 24, 2024

Researchers talk about “white dreaming,” a phenomenon involving one’s certain knowledge upon waking that they’ve had a dream combined with an inability to recall the dream’s plot. There’s also a similar phenomenon of lucid dreaming without imagery – without a setting, people, or even a sense of one’s own body. And in this emptiness, the person understands that they’re asleep. This state continues to be studied by Adriana Alcaraz-Sánchez, a PhD researcher in philosophy from the University of Glasgow (UK).

In her most recent study, the researcher conducted an online survey with 573 respondents, with the questions touching upon dreams in general, not just lucid ones. The results show that people rarely realize they’re asleep while experiencing this plotless emptiness.

The author identified two versions of this type of awareness:
– There was a plot, but the dream scene dissolved, leaving the person in a state of emptiness;
– The person became aware of themselves in emptiness but can’t recall what preceded it.

Have you ever had such an experience? If so, how did you find yourself in a lucid dream without imagery?
