Andrey Shashkov, a lucid dreaming researcher at REMspace, has been practicing lucid dreaming for 13 years. In addition to having spontaneous moments of lucidity in dreams, he deliberately enters lucid dreams 1-2 times a week.
— What is the best technique?
— Most of my entries occur with a method I use with Michael Raduga’s LUNA mask. Its essence lies in partially maintaining lucidity—overcoming slow-wave sleep—and, upon reaching the required state, fully activating lucidity and allowing REM sleep to “do its thing in the body.” There are many nuances, though. Sometimes, when the phase state isn’t crucial, I use this method without the mask, with some adjustments. The technique I use at the moment of entry in the aforementioned method is the direct activation of lucidity, which requires a specific understanding of this process and training. For Michael’s standard indirect method (upon awakening), you need to observe images, perform phantom wiggling, and imagine movement, but an important nuance is programming a successful entry in advance, starting in the evening.
— What is your favorite activity to do in the phase state?
— The activity I do in the phase state is almost always related to studying the possibility of reliably obtaining information and training the subconscious mind to achieve goals in reality. My specific actions in the phase often change because I am always testing new assumptions. For example, right now, after a break, I have a new wave of interest in one factor, and all my attention in the phase state is on it.
— Is this astral projection for you, or something that happens in the brain?
— Throughout my practice, I have had many different viewpoints, but reasoning about the brain’s workings and its connection to the phase state is the only thing that has yielded stable and consistent results. About nine years ago, when I began to realize that the astral plane and parallel worlds don’t work—to put it mildly—the way I imagined, I was disappointed. But then the true phase state within me showed no fewer miracles than I expected from the astral plane.
