Near-death experiences may be one of the phase states, and the “adventures” people have during these experiences often drastically change their life’s path. But how do they affect people’s careers? Canadian researchers Jamie Gruman and Akierah Binns decided to answer this question and identified six key changes that occur in the professional sphere after a coma. The authors conducted 14 interviews with survivors and found that money and career advancement fade into the background, giving way to meaningful work, spiritual values, and a desire to benefit others.
After a near-death experience, people often change professions, striving for something that brings more satisfaction. Their attitudes towards their colleagues and clients also change—empathy grows, as does the desire to build deep, sincere connections. Self-care also becomes a priority because harmony with oneself is a prerequisite for effective work. People also improve their ability to set boundaries in order to protect themselves from negativity and conserve energy for important tasks.
The scientists note that these changes can also be a useful source of inspiration for anyone who wants to make their work more meaningful and joyful, regardless of whether they’ve had a near-death experience. The main lesson: work is not just about money; it’s also an opportunity for self-realization, serving others, and demonstrating one’s best qualities.
