Is it possible to see the future in a lucid dream? Researchers from the US and the UK, led by Julia Mossbridge, conducted an experiment to find out. The test subject was Dave Green—an experienced lucid dreamer and artist who paints scenes from his dreams. Once lucid, he looked at a smartphone or computer screen in the dream, trying to glimpse a news story that researchers sent him the following day. In the morning, he either drew what he saw or described it in words and sent it to the research team.

After receiving the dreamer’s report, judges randomly selected a news item from a database of 478 real news stories published between 2006 and 2016 and sent it to Dave. In other words, during the night, Dave was meant to see a news story in his lucid dream—before the story had even been chosen.

The procedure was repeated ten times. The results were then evaluated by human judges and artificial intelligence. Amateur judges found one match out of ten; professionals found three out of ten. The AI produced the most optimistic result: five out of ten. The researchers believe AI can detect more subtle details that human perception might miss due to cognitive habits. The outcome is considered promising, especially given that, statistically, many matches would be extremely unlikely by chance alone.
