Billie Eilish is an American singer, songwriter, and multiple Grammy winner. At the beginning of 2021, the documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry was released, in which the 20-year-old young woman admitted that she still sleeps in her parents’ bed because she is afraid of sleep paralysis (SP) and nightmares. Her first studio album, which was released two years ago, is imbued with the same fears. Each song is about sleep paralysis, night terrors, and lucid dreams (LD).

In December, the singer gave an interview where she raised a very intimate topic. According to Metro, Billie started watching porn at the age of 11, which, the singer claims, “destroyed her brain” and caused nightmares and sleep paralysis. Many experts add that, of course, children at that age are not psychological ready to watch adult films.

But can this cause sleep paralysis? Recent studies have confidently linked SP to stress and anxiety disorders. For example, a recent article by authors from Poland and the UK suggests that PTSD in 70% of cases entails SP and other sleep disorders. Scientists from Germany listed female gender, irregular sleep (natural for celebrities of show business), and also post-traumatic or other stress disorder among the common causes of sleep paralysis.

As we know, sleep paralysis is a phase state, like lucid dreaming, a technique that Billie began practicing in order to control her dreams. Nevertheless, the SP attacks and nightmares from which she cannot wake up continue.

Do you associate sleep paralysis with psychological trauma?
