Afterdream is a 2D adventure game in the genre of psychological horror. The player plunges into a haunting lucid dream (LD); but, no matter how terrible the events, the main character knows that they are dreaming. According to the official trailer, the character got lost in a LD, where the line between reality and fiction is blurred.
Nevertheless, according to the GAMESPEW website, awareness of the fact that he is dreaming will not help the hero. For example, there is a very disturbing moment when a giant head appears around the corner, which, if we knew we were asleep, would be a signal to pinch ourselves and wake up. The realm that the player explores takes the form of an otherworldly, puzzle-filled house and is inhabited by ghosts. To escape this world, the hero uses a “strange camera” (judging by the trailer, this is an opportunity to see the surrounding space in pieces).
The creator of the game is Jesse Makkonen. His latest, most famous works—Distraint and Distraint 2—are similar in style. However, unlike these games’ sometimes pessimistic content, Afterdream promises a “vivid and dreamlike setting,” even though, as GAMESPEW adds, it is not yet known whether the finale of the game “will have us hugging our cat or blubbing in the corner.”
The game will be released on PC on March 15, 2023. The official trailer is available on YouTube.
