There has been much talk surrounding the recently released British TV series Behind Her Eyes on Netflix. Experts and fans alike have been hotly debating what is real and what is not in the show. To shed some clarity on the issues, the Sun tabloid decided to interview the series’ lucid dreaming and astral projection consultant, Jade Shaw.

Jade herself began her professional career far removed from out-of-body travel – she was a choreographer at the Royal Academy of Dance and had an international career. However, seven years ago, she had an out-of-body experience that changed her life and put her on the path of researching this phenomenon. Jade obtained a master’s degree in transpersonal psychology, produced a documentary on OBE, and became a popular coach in the field. Before that, she had also practiced lucid dreaming for many years.

“My first adult experience was about seven years ago, when I got up to go to the toilet, came back to bed and went straight into what I now know as the vibrational state, which happens just before you have an out of body experience,” Jade said. On the set of Behind Her Eyes she taught OBE techniques through meditation and also shared some of her personal tips with others.

“Step one is the ‘mind awake, body asleep’ state, which is your body completely relaxed but your mind awake and aware. Really basically, people can breathe in for 4, hold for 7 and breathe out for 8, repeating this for 10 minutes. On the exhale, imagine you’re releasing any tension from different areas of your body.”

The second step is the vibrational state technique. For example, imagine a white light in the distance that begins to approach you. “As it comes towards you it gets bigger and more powerful, until it’s right in front of you. Then it enters your forehead, and as it does it fills your body with vibrating energy.”

The third step is rocking. “Then, to have the out of body experience, you want to imagine rocking from side to side, and when it feels like you’re really moving… Your body starts to vibrate and from there you separate from your body… I rolled out from my body and I was in my room, looking back at my body.” The most important thing at this stage is not to move the body, but to imagine and feel the movement.

Even before the release of the series, Jade predicted the rise in popularity of the OBE phenomenon because, over the past few years, interest in it has grown significantly. “OBEs can be learnt by anyone, it’s an empowering technique that can help us improve our well-being on many levels. With increased mental health awareness, developments in neuroscience, the rise of spirituality and the future of artificial intelligence, we are on the cusp of a consciousness era. It’s the last real mystery for the modern world and this topic will soon catapult into the mainstream.”
