Comic artist Adam Ellis responds to internet trolls and subsequently begins to experience episodes of sleep paralysis. “Waking up” in the middle of the night, he sees an empty rocking chair moving in the corner of his apartment. Adam describes increasingly eerie incidents in a series of tweets and begins to believe he is being haunted by the ghost of a dead child named David. Encouraged by his boss to continue the Dear David thread, Adam gradually loses control over what is happening online and what is real.

This story began in 2017 when BuzzFeed author Adam Ellis created a Twitter thread called Dear David, in which he described his encounter with a ghost. These posts went viral, and Ellis gained over a million followers.

A year later, BuzzFeed Studios announced plans to adapt this correspondence into a feature film. In interviews, Ellis has explained that his posts were based on real events. He was never interested in convincing anyone that ghosts exist—he just wanted to share his story.

The thriller has finally been made, and as Collider explains, the plot will make viewers think twice before accepting requests on social media from unknown accounts.

The film will premiere in cinemas and on digital platforms on October 13.

The trailer is available on YouTube.
