Heroes is a series about people who suddenly discover they have superpowers. One can fly, another can control time, a third can read minds, and so on. Most of the characters are heroes in the traditional sense. But there are exceptions—for example, Sylar is a killer: to gain someone’s power, he murders the person who has it. A telepathic cop named Matt uses his ability to trap Sylar inside his own mind—in an empty, endless city with no people (series 4, episode 17).

To Sylar, it feels like months go by, though only hours have passed in reality, and Peter enters his dream. Peter also absorbs other people’s powers, but he does so without killing anyone. Now, with Matt’s ability, he’s come for Sylar. Peter tries to explain that it’s all a dream, that the deserted city isn’t real. Sylar doesn’t believe him at first, but once he accepts the truth, a wall appears on the road. It’s a replica of the one in Matt’s basement, where Sylar’s physical body lies sleeping.

Peter tries to break it down but can’t. They have to work together to escape. More dream-months pass before they realize that deep down, Sylar didn’t want to get out because he believed he deserved this punishment. And Peter couldn’t forgive him—after all, one of Sylar’s victims was Peter’s brother. Only by confronting their inner pain and fear do they finally begin to break down the wall together and wake up in Matt’s basement.
