Complete control is not always possible in a lucid dream, even for experienced lucid dreamers. To solve this problem, a group of researchers from Australia, led by Po-Yao Wang, developed the DreamCeption device. Scientists are confident that lucid dreams are the next stage in the development of virtual reality.

The authors want to help people to create dreams using interactive technologies. How does DreamCeption work? A person signals with their eyes (using classic left-right movements) that they have become aware in a dream. The system understands this and begins to provide stimuli based on a pre-selected theme.

For example, the authors chose diving for the experiment since lucid dreams provide safe environments where people can engage in extreme activities without the usual risks. The device provided blue light, the sound of running water, and vestibular and tactile stimulation to mimic immersion in the ocean. In general, the system uses the entire spectrum of sensations to foster the desired dream plot.

How do you create the desired plot in a lucid dream?

The report will be presented at the ACM CHI Conference in May 2024.
