Is it possible to change another person through lucid dreaming? The animated film Dreambuilders proposes just such a scenario. The main character, a girl named Minna, is struggling with her parents’ divorce, a move, and the arrival of a stepsister, Jenny (who is not a very pleasant person). By chance, she discovers that the world of dreams is not a chaotic jumble of images but a series of carefully organized “performances” and that funny blue creatures are responsible for the scenery and plot.
Encouraged by this discovery, Minna decides to use the world of dreams to improve her relationship with Jenny. She intervenes in her sister’s dreams, trying to change her character and interests, but her good intentions lead to unexpected consequences, as interfering in other people’s dreams sets off a chain of events that threatens not only the girls themselves but also the fragile balance of the dream world. Viewers are treated to a colorful journey through fantastical locations populated by unusual creatures, where reality intertwines with fiction, and friendship and understanding become the key to salvation.
As in lucid dreams, Minna gains the ability to influence what is happening around her. She finds a friend in Gaff, one of the “dream directors,” and together they try to remedy the situation. The film also teaches viewers an important lesson: you can’t forcibly change another person, even in their dreams. Minna’s strategy to “re-make” her sister fails, reminding us that reality will always prevail and that it is better to solve any problems together, within the family.
