Researchers from Pakistan, Ayesha Zahid Khana and Ayesha Umar, conducted a survey to understand what factors (e.g., personality traits or sleep habits) contribute to the practice of lucid dreaming. The authors surveyed 350 young people aged 18 to 25. Participants were not selected from the lucid dreaming community, so most of them were not familiar with this phenomenon.

Their results are simply statistics from the survey. So, what contributes to lucidity?

1. Neuroticism (statistically, people high in neuroticism tend to experience lucid dreams more often than other people).
2. Female gender (women are more prone to neuroticism than men).
3. Nightmares (nightmares have a positive impact on dream recall, which is important for lucid dreamers).
4. Sleep quality (successful practice is unlikely without adhering to good sleep habits).
5. Conscientiousness (conscientiousness significantly influences sleep quality).

Extraversion’s role in lucidity is controversial. Initially, scientists assumed that there would be more extroverts than introverts among lucid dreamers. However, the authors did not find a direct correlation between extroversion and lucid dreams. Although extroverts sleep better, they are worse at dream recall and are less prone to neuroticism. So, it seems that both extroverts and introverts have their own strengths.

How well do you fit into this successful lucid dreamer profile?
