Researchers from Australia, led by Ema Demšar and involving lucid dreaming long-term researcher Martin Dresler, conducted an experiment to determine the ideal lucid dreaming technique. As the authors explain, the phenomenon has been known for millennia, but research findings are ambiguous because experiences in this state are complex and highly variable.

Scientists recruited 38 people, and volunteers applied two methods in the laboratory: senses initiated lucid dreaming (SSILD) and targeted lucidity reactivation (TLR) using sensory signals and cognitive training. Participants confirmed their awareness using the classic method of moving their eyes. After waking up, detailed interviews were conducted.

The authors do not speak about the discovery of a universal and foolproof technique. They only once again conclude that the degree of awareness differs between pre-lucidity, semi-lucidity, and full dream lucidity. However, they add that experiments like this one ultimately improve lucid dream induction methods and their practical application, for example, in the treatment of nightmares.

The report was presented in June 2024 at the 41st Annual Conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
