Although people can find answers to their questions in lucid dreams, a person usually undergoes this process through familiar images. Seeking a teacher or a sage seems like a very logical solution. A group of scientists conducted an experiment in which experienced lucid dreamers intentionally elicited encounters with dream guides over four nights in a laboratory and two weeks at home. The authors included project leader Kennedy Robertson and regular researchers on the subject of lucid dreams, Remington Mallett and Michelle Carr.

Dream guides in lucid dreams are not just a picture. They are perceived as personalities with their own will, emotions, and even wisdom. Interactions with them are experienced as deeper and more mystical than interactions with ordinary dream characters. Scientists refer to this aspect of dream guides as their “agency,” which relates to their ability to control a situation and manifest their own selves.

The research findings open new possibilities for using lucid dreams and show that lucid dreamers can purposefully seek encounters with dream guides to gain access to wisdom, assistance, or spiritual experience. However, the specific beliefs held by an individual also influence such experiences and their significance.

Have you found a teacher or sage in a lucid dream? And do you think the answers they provide come from your subconscious or a separate personality?

The report was presented in June 2025 at the 42nd Annual Conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
