Sounds of Lucidity

Scientists from Switzerland, led by Emma Peters and with the participation of Daniel Erlacher, a constant researcher in the field of lucid dreaming, conducted another experiment in search of the best technique for inducing lucidity. The authors recruited eleven volunteers and focused on two methods: reality checks and auditory stimulation.

Before going to sleep, participants underwent training during which they were instructed to perform reality checks. That is, they were told to regularly check during the day if what’s around them is a dream, given that the absurdities in our dreams are usually mistaken for reality without raising any doubt or attracting attention. Then, auditory stimulation was added directly during sleep. Specifically, participants were told, “You are dreaming.” The scientists intended for the participants to carry out a reality check upon hearing this phrase and, subsequently, become lucid.

Six of the eleven participants reported having entered a lucid dream, but only three confirmed their awareness through recorded eye movements. The authors note the importance of checking every step in the lucid dreaming induction protocol and determining the effectiveness of reality checks and the extent to which this technique leads to lucidity.
