A group of villains has seized power and are controlling people’s dreams using psychotropic substances and hypnosis. Anyone who opposes them begins to have nightmares, and the wounds inflicted on them in their dreams appear in reality. This is the world the heroes of the Sliders series found themselves in (season 3, episode 6, The Dream Masters). In this series, four friends travel between parallel worlds, and each episode is a new story.
But we are interested not in the script of this series from the 1990s but rather in the techniques used by lucid dreamers. In the fight against the villains, the heroes enter a lucid dream using the direct method of hypnosis and intention. Unfortunately, their process of experiencing a shared lucid dream will not work for us. This is science fiction, and the heroes are immersed in a single plot, connected to devices that we do not have. Nevertheless, various methods of dealing with nightmares through lucidity can be useful:
1. Maintaining lucidity. The heroes constantly remind themselves and their friends that what surrounds them is part of a dream.
2. Facing your own fears. One of the heroes, Rembrandt, allows a snake to bite him to prove to himself and his enemies that this space is not dangerous and has no power over him.
3. Creating weapons. Rembrandt causes a pistol to materialize and uses it to kill the enemy.
4. Understanding that a person can do anything in a dream. The heroes catch and throw fireballs while knives launched by the enemies fly past them.
Do you believe it’s possible to enter a shared lucid dream?
