Is there a lucid dream space that different people can access? Could it be that these are specific locations that remain constant for everyone—like a separate planet where we travel at night, complete with the same cities, rivers, and mountains? Australian researchers Dan Kennedy and Andrusa Lawson hypothesized this and set out to map the world of lucid dreams. They are exploring how reality and the inner world are interconnected, offering two approaches to peering into the unconscious.
In particular, Lawson is trying to find common places that recur in the dreams of different people, even if they come from different cultures. He creates diagrams to show the connections between these spaces. Imagine a subway map on which the stations are different dreams, and the lines between them link them together. Lawson uses both off-the-shelf software and custom tools for this purpose.
Meanwhile, Kennedy uses real-world geography as his starting point. He has created an online map where people can mark the places they’ve seen in lucid dreams. He hopes to reveal hidden connections between waking life and the world of dreams and understand why certain locations often appear in dreams. The project started in November 2024 as part of an art residency in Heraklion, Crete.
What do you think—is there such a thing as a shared lucid dream space? Is it possible to create a map of it?
The report was presented in June 2025 at the 42nd Annual Conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
