Sleep paralysis is one of the phase states that can lead to lucid dreaming. However, it often causes fear, resulting in legends about demons, while doctors continue to search for a cure. Dr. Joe, a medical doctor who is well-known on TikTok, recently offered a list of tips that went viral on popular media. His four pieces of advice are:
1. Don’t believe what you see. You might be hallucinating.
2. Don’t think about the visions. Remember, they are not real. Focus on something else, like wiggling your little finger.
3. Close your eyes if demons or other horrors scare you.
4. Don’t try to get out of sleep paralysis. It will only cause panic.
As reported by Mirror, the doctor himself suffers from sleep paralysis and explains the phenomenon as follows: Typically, during REM sleep, the brain is active; this is when people dream. To prevent the sleeper from acting out these scenes, the brain deactivates the muscles, essentially inducing paralysis. But sometimes the natural sleep-wake cycle is disrupted, leading to what we know as sleep paralysis: a person cannot move, while dream images intrude into reality, which can be frightening.
