Miranda Cosgrove is an American actress and singer who gained fame for her leading role in the teen sitcom iCarly. At that time, Miranda was the highest-paid young actress on American TV. Following the show’s success, the young woman released a self-titled album featuring four songs. She has been acting since the age of three and has appeared in various productions, including the teen sitcom Drake & Josh and the cult remake Yours, Mine & Ours.

Recently, during a show hosted by singer Kelly Clarkson, Miranda shared her “terrifying” experience with sleep paralysis (SP). Here’s how she described the phenomenon: “It’s where you wake up—your eyes are open and you’re lying in bed—but you’re asleep, so your dreams that you’re having seem like they’re happening in the room you’re in. Like, your eyes are open, but you can’t move.” Miranda considers it horrible and suggests sticking to a strict sleep schedule as a remedy because she experiences SP during moments of stress or fatigue.

The second guest on the show, also an actor, Djimon Hounsou, partially shared Miranda’s emotions, recounting that he had experienced “something similar” in which he seemed “asleep briefly” but “wide awake” while feeling “paralyzed in [his] bed.” Upon hearing these stories, Kelly, with relief, noted that despite her hectic life, she has never experienced SP. “So maybe I’m doing alright,” she rejoiced.

It is worth mentioning that SP is one of the phase states, which also include lucid dreaming and out-of-body experiences. However, many people still fear SP. In a report by SELF (a health-focused media outlet) that recounted the mentioned celebrity dialogue, they recommend ensuring comfort in the bedroom, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption (especially in the evenings), and avoiding phones, laptops, and televisions at least 30 minutes before sleep as part of the treatment.

Have you ever tried to deliberately induce SP?
