Once upon a time, people believed that the Earth was flat and that diseases were the wrath of demons or God. Any other explanation seemed absurd, groundless, and unjustifiable. American researcher and physicist Thomas Campbell considers near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, lucid dreams, encounters with UFOs, communication with the deceased or spirits, telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis, and similar phenomena as contemporary “hard problems.” However, they only appear difficult because our perception of reality is very limited.

The author provides an analogy. There are fundamental principles of physics, such as mass, space, time, gravity, and the speed of light. These are fundamental aspects that simply exist. The same can be said about consciousness: scientists are equally perplexed about its origin and purpose. In traditional science, no one knows where these foundational things came from—they just exist.

Another analogy by the author leads to a melancholic thought: will we ever be able to understand these phenomena at all? Imagine an elf “avatar” roaming around in the World of Warcraft (WoW) video game. While immersed in this virtual world, the avatar can never open the door to the WoW office and find the server that creates the game. In other words, the server must exist outside the game.

As the researcher concludes, we are unable to comprehend the origins of things while being inside our universe. Similarly, biologists cannot discover the origins of the very first cell; they can only infer how it evolved.

Do you believe in the possibility of studying these states?
