With the help of lucid dreams (LD), you can train skills, heal the body and the psyche, communicate with people who are inaccessible in reality, and just have fun. But can LD contribute to the dreamer’s spiritual transformation? Deanna Lynn, a researcher from Sofia University in California, USA, asked this question in her dissertation.

To answer it, she turned to seven experienced lucid dreamers who believed they had experienced a spiritual transformation as a result of LD. Six of them shared artwork representing their experience of LD and five gave detailed interviews on the subject.

Most of the participants stated that lucid dreaming significantly affected their perception of the world and their personal life. At the same time, the ability to understand the message transmitted through LDs was a determining factor in whether the lucid dreamer was spiritually transformed by the dream.

Lucid dreams are one of the phase states, which also include false awakenings, sleep paralysis, out-of-body and near-death experiences (NDE). Out of these states, traditionally it has been NDE that has attracted scholarly attention in the context of spirituality and changing one’s outlook on the world.

Have you experienced a spiritual transformation as a result of LD or other phase states?

The work was published in August 2022 on the ProQuest web-site.
