Lucid Dreamers: Anxious, Active, and Flexible? - Phase Today - Lucid Dreaming and Sleep Paralysis News

Some people are more prone to practicing lucid dreaming than others. This is the conclusion drawn from a new study by Japanese researchers Junyi Shi and Eiko Matsuda, who surveyed 647 students from China. In addition to lucid dreaming, the questionnaire included questions about the students’ personalities and habits.

The authors found that people who are prone to negative emotions and who prefer to actively solve problems by searching for their causes and solutions are more likely than others to experience lucid dreams. Though these individuals choose action over avoidance, avoidance is not always a bad strategy, as those who choose avoidance have better control over their dreams. The ability to control dreams is also higher in those who are open to new experiences and approach problem-solving flexibly.

Sleep duration also plays a role in successful lucid dreaming practice. For instance, the study revealed that Chinese students sleep longer than Japanese students. By understanding such factors, people can develop the qualities necessary for lucid dreaming.
