Mimi Choi from Vancouver is not just a famous makeup artist, but a painter who uses the human face as the canvas for her imagination, with a particular penchant for optical illusions. For example, in one of her latest creations, the young woman turned her own face into a grid of many eyes, ears, and lips, with several pins “piercing” the painted parts.
In 2019, Choi, who already has more than one and a half million followers on Instagram, created face art for actor Ezra Miller for the Met Gala, one of the biggest annual events in the fashion world. For the occasion, Mimi created another collage of numerous eyes and bright red lips.
According to the Independent Online news website, Mimi suffers from sleep paralysis (one of the phase states that also include lucid dreams, out-of-body experiences, etc.). When such episodes occur upon falling asleep or waking up, the artist, unable to move and speak, experiences vivid visions that often inspire her subsequent works.
Indeed, Choi’s face art has the quality of illusions or hallucinations, when your vision is blurred and you begin to doubt your perception of reality. Most of her make up creations include multitudes of eyes and lips on the human face, making it difficult to find the real ones among them.
Have you ever had visions in the phase state that inspire your creativity?
