In 2022, interest in the topic of lucid dreaming increased sharply: the number of scientific articles for that year doubled compared to 2021. In 2023, this trend continued, providing us with 47 studies, one more than the previous year.

The main trend seen in the past year was the efforts of scientists to establish real-time communication with lucid dreamers and to control dreams using technology. In March, researchers at REMspace introduced the artificial language Remmyo; in June, they published data on the testing of a brain implant for dream control; and in September, they heard music from dreams for the first time. German scientists presented a new eye signal system that grants the ability to transmit complete phrases, and the ambitious startup Prophetic promises to release a device based on artificial intelligence.

The second trend was continuing attempts to find the best methodology for inducing lucid dreams and out-of-body experiences. Both risky methods (such as drugs and electrical brain stimulation) and classic techniques (such as hypnosis, breathing exercises, and music) are being used, as well as more traditional approaches like Yoga Nidra. REMspace researchers compared the best techniques for inducing lucid dreams.

The third popular theme is deriving practical benefits from lucid dreaming. Relevant topics include sports training and seeking creative ideas in dreams. However, scientists more often focus on developing treatments, primarily for psychological issues.

The countries that have made the greatest contributions to the development of the topic are the United States and Russia (with 12 articles each, although the count for Russia includes four preprints, while that for the United States has three). Preprints are present among all the other leaders: the Netherlands produced five articles (one preprint), Germany produced five articles (two preprints), and Spain produced four articles (one preprint).

A preprint is an article that has not yet undergone peer review and has been published in advance. It does not appear in major scientific databases, but even well-known scientists do not dismiss the opportunity to publish bold ideas and initial (pilot) results as preprints. In 2023, the individual leaders in research on lucid dreaming were authors from REMspace: Michael Raduga (12 articles, four preprints), Andrey Shashkov (10 articles, three preprints), and Zhanna Zhunusova (six articles, two preprints).
