“You have been selected to participate in a project that aims to harness the power of dreams and develop your skills in lucid dreaming. With training, you will be able to shape your waking life, help others around you, and influence the future of our society.” Several people, unfamiliar with each other, received a strange package containing an audio recording with instructions, an empty journal, a leaflet with the inscription Lucid Dreaming, and a Rubik’s cube token.

In August of this year, a filmmaker and Flinders University (Australia) lecturer, Tom Young, announced his new project, promising to create a feature film about lucid dreams in 100 days. It was part of his work with students, and the author initially planned to make a micro-budget film with minimal dialogue.

Although the idea is presented as a feature film, it is more reminiscent of a documentary and educational video: parallel storylines show different people who begin to explore lucid dreaming. A young woman named Macy stands out from the group of “chosen ones” who received the mysterious box. She also keeps a dream journal and fiddles with the Rubik’s cube token while trying to cope with personal traumas.

At the same time, a TV show about lucid dreaming is being filmed, in which experts discuss the known techniques for engaging in this practice and possible goals. The guests embody the images of classical representatives of this field: a scientist, a doctor, an esoteric (a meditation and religious meanings enthusiast), and a tech entrepreneur (a developer of apps and devices).

The dream sequences are shot from a first-person perspective. After all (as stated on the project’s official website), this is how most people see dreams. However, even though the dreams look ordinary (non-lucid), they change the daily lives of the heroes: Macy develops memory and intellectual abilities, whereas other participants in the experiment start drawing, playing the piano, and engaging in sports.

But who is this mysterious experimenter who sent them the packages? And what is their goal? We won’t publish any spoilers. The film is available on YouTube.
