The study of phase states (lucid dreams (LD), out-of-body experiences, etc.) is gaining popularity. A year ago, in a similar review, we collected 22 articles by scientists who contributed to the development of the field in 2021. By comparison, this past year has produced 46 publications, over twice that number.

The top three countries in this arena are the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom (thirteen, eight, and six articles, respectively). Due to sanctions, Russia, which topped the list last year, now shares 4th place with Hong Kong, having produced only three scientific articles on the topic, all of them coming out of REMspace. Nevertheless, the institute’s founder, Michael Raduga, shares 1st place in the authors’ ranking with German scientist Michael Schredl and Anglo-American researcher Berenika Maciejewicz.

Last year, the scientific community recognized an important fact—that there is no increased activity in the frontal zones at 40 Hz in lucid dreams, as previously thought. The co-author of the article that delivered the proof was the legendary Stephen LaBerge. In June, another important discovery was made: for the first time ever, Michael Raduga detected a phrase spoken in a LD.

The topic of COVID-19 and its repercussions on the phase states remained on the agenda: after three years of living with the pandemic, scientists continue to study its impact on lucid dreams, unanimously noting that the number of LDs has increased due to COVID-19. Most researchers, however, focused on finding the best LD techniques and methods for applying this practice, for example, for the purposes of sports training, solving psychological problems, and spiritual growth.

The scientific community has likewise repeatedly raised questions about the possible dangers of LD. Practice can disrupt the natural sleep pattern, which can interfere with bodily recovery. This topic was investigated by such well-known researchers as Remington Mallett, Karen Konkoly, and Ken Paller, noting, however, that LD practice still entails huge advantages that are difficult to refuse.
