Many people, when first encountering a phase state (lucid dreams, sleep paralysis, out-of-body experience, etc.), wonder what would happen if what they saw in their mind’s eye were actually real. Sometimes, when such an idea comes to the mind of a creative person, it produces a new work of art. That is the case of Conjuring the Beyond, a new horror movie coming out this month.

As the screenwriter and director Calvin McCarthy explained: “About a year ago I had my first and only experience with sleep paralysis. At that moment, when I woke up I immediately thought of it as a movie. What if that WAS real. What if in that state between consciousness and unconsciousness our minds are susceptible to other worlds around us? Maybe the unconscious isn’t such a pretty place. The concept and the overall story for Conjuring the Beyond came quickly. It was one of those ideas that feels so hot that it almost writes itself.”

In the film, this experience is embodied in the story of a young woman named Wanda. She is recently divorced, feels lost, and experiences frightening sleep paralysis. To ease her mental anguish, the heroine enrolls in an alternative sleep research course, where Dr. Richard Pretorious uses hypnosis as a treatment.

However, when the other participants begin to disappear, and Pretorious becomes more and more dangerously possessed by the “demons” of the human mind, Wanda must solve the mystery of her condition before it’s too late.

According to the Consumer Electronics Net website, the film is scheduled to be released on DVD and digital platforms on September 13. The trailer is available on YouTube.
